Plant-tastic Bulletin Board

Lesson #8421

Students learn about nature by planting and growing seeds that will produce a spectacular bulletin board in three to four weeks.

Grade Level:
1-2, 3-5, 6-8

This interactive bulletin board doubles as a learning station, where students may observe and measure plant growth. If different seeds are used, students may compare the growth rate of plants and consider external factors affecting growth. Students not only grow intellectually from this experience, but also in character, as they are responsible for the care of their plants. It is a good idea for the teacher to plant extra seed bags, in case a student's plant does not grow.

Observe, measure and record the growth and changing characteristics of plants as they appear on a dynamic bulletin board.

Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Double-Sided Tape, Glue, Labels, Paper towels, Pens, Plastic sandwich bags, Seeds, Staples, Stickers

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Die-cut the title, &"Food for Thought,"; using the 3" Lollipop Alphabet and 3" Lollipop Shadow Alphabet in contrasting colors. Mat the letters and adhere the title to the poster.
  2. Laminate colorful cardstock or construction paper for durable XL Flower Pots. Die-cut Flower Pots (Figure A).
  3. Hand cut 2" x 3" rectangles using cardstock or construction paper to create Flower Pot labels.
  4. Adhere a label to each Flower Pot using glue or double-sided tape. Students can add their names and embellish with stickers or tiny die-cuts (Figure B).
  5. Cut paper towel width-wise so it is slightly narrower than the plastic sandwich bag. Fold towel in half lengthwise. About 1" from the folded edge, fold the paper towel back over the fold. Turn over and fold the other side back also, creating an &"M"; (Figure C).
  6. Insert folded paper towel (open ends down) into plastic sandwich bag so that top of paper towel is slightly below the top of the plastic bag (Figure C).
  7. Fold the bottom of the plastic sandwich bag up, if needed, so the paper towel is sitting at the bottom of the fold and will be supported. Tape in place.
  8. Place seeds in fold in paper towel. Birdseed, grass seed, alfalfa seed, tops of carrots, pieces of sweet potatoes or beans work well. If using beans, soak them in water overnight before putting them in paper towel; otherwise, they could mold (Figure D).
  9. Tape plastic bag to the back of the opening in the Flower Pot die-cut with the plastic bag just below the opening so it appears the seeds grow out of the pot.
  10. Moisten paper towel and seeds.
  11. Staple the Flower Pots to the bulletin board. Be sure to staple at the top of the plastic bag so bags won't leak.
  12. Plants will grow best if the lights are kept on during the night.
  13. Water often, keeping the seeds moist but not sitting in water. In three to four weeks, or sooner, beautiful plants will be growing on the bulletin board (see Main Photo).
