Standard 3: Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas
- K-4 Students select and use subject matter, symbols and ideas to communicate meaning.
- 5-8 Students use subjects, themes and symbols that demonstrate knowledge of contexts, values and aesthetics that communicate intended meaning in artworks.
Puzzle dies enable students to create unique learning tools for any academic subject area. Through the use of bright colors, basic shapes and an AllStar Machine, students develop simple puzzles to reinforce basic health concepts. Students write on individual puzzle pieces to show how their ideas "connect" together to form a complete concept. The use of the AllStar Heart symbolically represents how healthy habits can lead to a happier life. Alternatively, the teacher may choose to use the AllStar Apple to represent healthy living.
Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Colored Pencils, Glue, Pens, Scissors
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Die-cut a yellow AllStar Heart (Figure A).
- Adhere the Heart to blue construction paper (Figure B).
- Die-cut the Heart using AllStar Puzzle #1, keeping the Heart within the borders of the Puzzle (Figure C).
- Carefully remove the pieces and lay them flat on a desk (Figure D).
- Write one healthy habit on each of the six Puzzle pieces (e.g., healthy food, exercise, good night's rest, etc).
- Students will share their puzzles and take turns putting them together.
- Consider mounting the pieces onto red 6" x 5" construction paper for display (see Main Photo).
