Math: Measurement

Instructional programs from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 5 should enable all students to understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems and processes of measurement.

• In Pre-Kindergarten through grade 2, all students should recognize the attributes of length, volume, weight, area and time.

Create a handy standing clock to demonstrate how to measure time and find elapsed time. Students can sit the clocks on their desk and adjust accordingly throughout the day to reinforce concepts.

Supplies Used: Brad, Cardstock, Chalk, Crayons, Marker (Black), Numbers (Self-Adhesive), Scissors, Tape (Double-Sided)

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

1. Fold light yellow construction paper or cardstock in half. Place the folded edge just inside the cutting edge of the LG Basic Beginning Sun and die-cut. This creates a card for time information (Figure A).
2. Die-cut the Sun again using light yellow and darker yellow paper.
3. Cut along the perforated lines in the middle of the darker yellow Sun and adhere the cut circle to the lighter Sun.
4. Die-cut SM Clock Hands using black paper. With a small brad, attach the Clock Hands to the middle of the dark yellow Sun (see Main Photo).
5. Using a black marker or self-adhesive numbers, add numbers to the clock face. Attach the completed clock face to the folded Sun.
6. Orange chalk or crayons may be used to add highlights (see Main Photo).
