Support youngsters with fun lacing projects to develop fine motor skills. Painting and cutting activities promote motor skills and reinforce movement concepts in the classroom. Use ribbons and lace to expose students to multiple textures and patterns. Development of fine motor skills will enable students to gain competency in drawing and writing. Consider reading a short story about St. Patrick's Day to introduce the Lacing Shamrock activity or a Thanksgiving Tale for the Lacing Pumpkin activity.
Supplies Used: Cardstock, Colored Pencils, Crayons, Glue, Ribbon, Yarn
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
Pumpkin
- Die-cut the XL Lacing Pumpkin from orange construction paper or cardstock. Alternately, use white construction paper and color with crayons.
- Die-cut the stem from 3" x 3" green construction paper (Figure A).
- Layer the stem onto the orange Pumpkin and adhere.
- Die-cut a Tag from any light-colored construction paper. Write the words "Happy Fall Ya'll" on the Tag. Alternately, die-cut a pre-printed message using the ClearCrop die. Position the die so that the message can be seen through the clear plastic and die-cut (Figure B).
- Cut a 40" piece of ribbon to lace the Pumpkin. Tie a knot at the end. Trim the ends of the ribbon.
- Cut a 24" piece of ribbon. Lace it through the Tag, securing the Tag to the Pumpkin. Consider adding pop-dots behind the Tag to secure the Tag in place.
- Tie a bow to complete the project. Trim the ends of the ribbon (Figure C).
Shamrock
- Die-cut the XL Lacing Shamrock from green construction paper or cardstock. Alternately, use white construction paper and color with crayons.
- Die-cut the word "LUCKY" using 2" Vagabond Alphabet, Capital Letters. Adhere the letters to the center of the Shamrock.
- Cut a 60" piece of green yarn and lace the Shamrock. Tie a bow at the end. Trim away the ends of the bow (Figure D).
