Discover Reading

Concept:
Create a fun bulletin board full of magnifying glasses created by students as they discover new stories.
Objective:
Encourage students to read different authors and different types of books.
Recommended Grade Levels: 1-2, 3-5, 6-8
Curriculum: English Language Arts
Supplies Used: Cardstock, Marking Pens, Scissors, Tape
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Die-cut the letters "D, I, S, C, V, E, R" and the word "READING" from black cardstock or construction paper using the 3" Block Capital Letter Set.
- Die-cut a LG Magnifying Glass using black cardstock or construction paper. This will be used with the handle slanted up, as the letter "O" in the word DISCOVER.
- Die-cut SM ClearCrop Circle from light blue paper (the ClearCrop SM Circle has a diameter of 2 3/4"). Adhere this to the back of the Magnifying Glass with glue or tape.
- Die-cut the "eye" from white paper using the LG 5 Senses/Hear, See, Smell Die. Adhere the Eye in the center of the Magnifying Glass. Put a black center in the Eye and color the iris (Figure A).
- Put the title across the top of the bulletin board area.
- Die-cut LG Magnifying Glass from a variety of paper colors.
- Die-cut SM ClearCrop Circles from white paper.
- The students will embellish Magnifying Glasses with colors or marking pens (Figure B).
- The students will write their name, title of the book and why the book was interesting onto the Circle (Figure C).
- Tape the Circle behind the Magnifying Glass (Figure D).
- Add the completed Magnifying Glasses to the Bulletin Board and discover the joys of reading (see Main Photo)!
