This Flashcard Wheel enables students to learn and review state capitals by themselves or with partners. Consider using this strategy to introduce or review a unit. This learning tool can also be used as a form of assessment. Use the Flashcard Wheel to supplement lessons in any subject area.

Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Adhesive Letters, Brad, Glue, Scissors

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Die-cut the XL Flashcard Bottom Wheel from purple cardstock or construction paper.
  2. Die-cut the XL Flashcard Top Wheel #2 from green cardstock or construction paper.
  3. Adhere computer, hand-printed or adhesive letters for 10 state names around the outer edge of the Bottom Wheel, checking to make sure the names fit within the opening at the top edge of the Top Wheel (Figure A).
  4. Adhere the state capital names opposite the state names on the Bottom Wheel, down approximately 1 1/2", so the capitals will show through the inner opening on the Top Wheel (Figure B).
  5. Die-cut a LG U.S.A. from yellow paper. Hand cut the five Great Lakes. Adhere the U.S.A. and the Great Lakes to the Top Wheel.
  6. Computer, hand print or use adhesive letters for the title and adhere above the U.S.A.
  7. Use a small brad and push through the holes in both Wheels to secure. Secure the brad lightly so the bottom Wheel will turn easily.
  8. Complete five Wheels to include all 50 states (see Main Photo).
