Math: Data Analysis and Probability

Pre-K-8: Instructional programs from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 should enable all students to formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize and display relevant data to answer them.

• In Pre-Kindergarten through grade 2, all students should represent data using concrete objects, pictures and graphs.
• In grades 3-5, all students should represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs and line graphs.
• In grades 6-8, all students should select, create and use appropriate graphical representations of data, including histograms, box plots and scatter plots.

Create a unique buddy graph to track numbers of students in class. Consider a fun ice-breaker prior to graphing, where students learn each other's names and interests. Record the names and represent students on this fun chart. Post this chart on an all-about-me bulletin board or near the class calendar.

Note: This lesson can be created using either Ellison AllStar or SureCut Dies.

Supplies Used: Black Pen, Butcher Paper, Cardstock, Colored Markers, Crayons, Glue, Patterned Paper, Scissors

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

1. Cut a piece of butcher paper large enough to allow each student to place a figure representing them on the graph.
2. Die-cut black letters for the title of the graph using the AllStar Block 1 1/2" Uppercase Letters & Numbers Set, or computer or hand print the title and adhere to the poster.
3. Die-cut the words "boys" and "girls," as well as the number of students from the AllStar Letters Set and the AllStar Block 1 1/2" Lowercase Letters Punctuation Set using black cardstock or construction paper. Adhere to the left side of the poster.
   
4. Die-cut any AllStar Boy or Girl Figure using various shades of tan and brown, giving one to each student.
5. Die-cut any AllStar Boy or Girl Figure, Dress & Shoes and any AllStar Boy or Girl Figure, Shirt, Pants & Shoes, using various colors of construction and patterned paper.
   
6. If using SureCut Dies, use Block Capital and Lowercase Letter Sets for steps 2 and 3.
7. If using SureCut Dies, die-cut Paper Dolls, Paper Pals #1 or Paper Doll (Basic Beginnings) for steps 5 and 6.
8. Students may choose to use the die-cut shapes to embellish their Figure, or they may use crayons or markers to color them.
   
9. Each student will print their name on their Figure and place it on the graph (see Main Photo).
