Western Movement Report
Lesson #3164

Concept:

Provide students with a journal to record their study of the Western Movement.

Objective:

Study or write a report on the movement of the settlers to the west.

Recommended Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12

Curriculum: Social Studies

Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Adhesive Letters, Scissors, Twine, Glue, Double-Sided Tape

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

1. Die-cut two copies of the XL Album Cover from cardstock or construction paper.

2. Die-cut multiple copies of the XL Album Page from white or lined paper (Figure A). Sandwich between the two Album Covers and secure with a double lacing of twine. Cut a 28" length of twine. Starting at the front, lace both ends of the twine through to the back of the Album. Cross both ends to the opposite hole on the back and lace through to the front again. Tie securely in the center with a knot and trim the ends (Figure B).

3. Using 9" strips of dark orange, light orange, tan, and brown construction paper, rip each paper moving up and down to create hills and gullies. Glue each strip on the cover from highest to lowest, keeping the bottom edges even (Figure C). This will make the background terrain.

4. Die-cut the Large Covered Wagon from tan, white and dark brown cardstock or construction paper.

5. Leave a tan Wagon whole and embellish by cutting the bottom off the white Wagon and adhere to the tan Wagon.

6. Cut the dark brown wheels from the Wagon and adhere to the tan Wagon, or cut the brown wheels into spokes and adhere.

7. Adhesive letters can be added for the title, or the title and student's name can be computer printed prior to cutting the front Album Cover for the report (see Main Photo).

Now, happy reading and writing!
