Source: National Science Education Standards
Fine Arts: Visual Arts
5-8 Standard 3: Choosing and Evaluating a Range of Subject Matter, Symbols and Ideas
- Students select and use subjects, themes and symbols that demonstrate knowledge of contexts, values and aesthetics that communicate intended meaning in artworks.
After a lesson on conservation and natural resources, engage students through service learning activities to raise environmental awareness. Brainstorm possible projects, draft a plan, and carry out steps to meet goals with active student participation. A creative sign-up poster for selected activities promotes student voice and instills responsibility as well as accountability. This interactive display provides opportunities for reflection as students realize that their contributions are meaningful and have long-lasting effects on their community and the environment. Such activities can be implemented to honor Earth Day as well as raise consciousness about conservation and available resources throughout the year.
Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Glue, Scissors
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Cut an 18" x 30" piece of green cardstock or poster board for the sign-up poster.
- Die-cut the LG Globe from black cardstock or construction paper. Die-cut the SM Globe #2 from light blue and brown paper. Adhere the blue water from Globe #2 to the black Globe. Adhere the brown land from Globe #2 to the black Globe (Figure A). Adhere the completed Globe to the top of the poster.
- Die-cut the title for the poster using the Fruit Smoothie 3" Alphabet Capital Letter Set from dark blue paper. Adhere to the top of the poster (see Main Photo).
- Mat light blue sheets of paper to slightly larger pieces of dark blue paper for activity sign-up sheets. Adhere the sign-up sheets to the poster.
- Die-cut various shapes that coordinate with the activities and adhere them to the corresponding sign-up sheets. To create the Broom, die-cut the Large Witch on Broom and cut away the Witch.
- Use hand printed, computer printed or adhesive letters for the activity titles and date (see Main Image).
- Create this lesson with any combination of die-cuts (see Main Image 2).
