Hats Off to Pilgrims
Lesson #4033
Concept:
Create a Pilgrim Hat booklet for a Thanksgiving assignment.
Objective:
Use a Pilgrim Hat booklet to write a short poem or reflect briefly on a famous quotation about Thanksgiving.
Recommended Grade Level: 3-5
Curriculums: English Language Arts, Social Studies
Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Glue, Plain or Lined Paper, Scissors, Stapler
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Fold a piece of 9" x 12" black construction paper in half (paper is now 9" x 6"). Lay the folded edge of the paper just INSIDE the top of the LG Pilgrim Hat to make the die-cut open upwards to form a booklet (Figure A).
- Place the paper and Pilgrim Hat die, rubber side down and die-cut.
- Use black paper scraps to cut two 1 1/2" squares. Tape these inside the Pilgrim Hat to cover both holes where the buckle would be (Figure B).
- Die-cut the perforated hatband on the LG Pilgrim Hat die using gray paper (Figure C).
- Trim the gray hatband along the perforated lines and adhere both pieces to the Hat using glue or other adhesive. Save the small gray rectangular piece from the center of the buckle.
- Lay a 1 1/2" square of yellow paper over the buckle area and die-cut. Adhere the buckle and gray center to the Hat (Figure D).
- Cut 2" x 3 1/2" sheets of plain or lined paper and staple inside the Pilgrim Hat (Figure E). A poem, quotation or greeting could be written first on 2" x 3 1/2" paper then stapled into the Pilgrim Hat booklet.
