My Family Garden
Lesson #4063
Concept:
Create family photo flowers for a bulletin board or student activity.
Objective:
Establish a sense of identity and family heritage.
Recommended Grade Levels: 1-2, Pre-K-K
Curriculums: Health, Social Studies
Supplies Used: Adhesive Letters, Bulletin Board Paper, Cardstock, Flower Pot, Glue, Photos, Pop-Dots, Poster Board, Straws, Tape
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Die-cut LG Generic Flower #1A from red or other colors of cardstock or construction paper.
- Students should bring a family photo or photos from home. A color copier makes this activity easy because even one photo can be copied many times so each subject can be centered behind a Flower opening.
- Center a photo of a family member's face under the opening in the Flower and lightly trace around the opening (Figure A). Remove the photo and cut a slightly larger circle around the tracing. Re-center the trimmed face behind the opening and adhere to the back of the Flower with tape, glue, or other adhesive (Figure B).
- Use adhesive letters or hand-write the name of each family member on the Flower.
- Tape a straw behind each Flower and set aside (Figure C). Flowers can now be arranged in an XL Flower Pot and attached to a poster or bulletin board (Figure D), or they can be inserted into a real decorated pot and sent home with each child.
- Die-cut the XL Flower Pot from light orange and gold cardstock or construction paper. Leave the orange Flower Pot whole and cut the upper rim from the gold Pot. Attach the gold rim over the orange Pot.
- Arrange "family" Flowers in XL Flower Pot and adhere to a piece of poster board for each child or attach to a bulletin board. A pop-dot can be used behind each Flower to raise it slightly off the backing and to allow room for the straws.
- The poster or bulletin board should be labeled "My Family Garden" (see Main Photo).
