Pattern Block Manipulatives

Concept:

Students create a shape with pattern blocks and assign a number value to each of the pattern block shapes to calculate the total value.

Objective:

Students will use pattern blocks to calculate total value of shapes to practice math skills.

Recommended Grade Levels: 1-2, 3-5, 6-8

Curriculums: Fine Arts & Crafts, Math

Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Glue, Patterned Paper

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

Assign a number value to each of the pattern block shapes. Students create designs and calculate the total value in dollars and cents, Roman numerals, fractions or decimals.

1. Die-cut various Pattern Block Multiple shapes from cardstock, construction or patterned paper. Paper can be laminated prior to cutting for more durability (Figure A).

2. Assign a number value to each different shape, using Press-On numbers or print using a permanent marker (Figure B).

3. Students will create different designs and calculate the value of each design (Figure C).

4. The value assigned can be in dollars and cents, Roman numerals, fractions or decimals.

5. Pattern Block shapes may be used to create and repeat various designs.
