Hamsa Necklace

Concept:
Create a unique hamsa necklace or keychain using Shrink Film and permanent markers.
Adult supervision recommended.
Objective:
Make a decorative hamsa, or Hand of Miriam, to show how some regard it as a protective amulet.

Standard 1: Understanding and Applying Media, Techniques and Processes
- K-4 - Students use different media, techniques and processes to communicate ideas, experiences and stories.

Decorate a Hamsa as an accent to bulletin boards, as jewelry or to supplement any course of religious studies. Incorporate icons and symbols into curriculum to reinforce meaning and highlight tradition.
Supplies Used: Cord, Craft Jump Rings, Clear Shrink Film, Craft Knife, Hand Punch, Markers (Permanent), Ribbon, Scissors
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Die-cut a LG Hamsa using clear Shrink Film. Using a craft knife or a punch, cut a 1 1/2" hole in the center of the Hamsa palm. Punch a hole at the top of the Hamsa using Hand Punch 1/4" Circle (Figure A). Punch another hole just above the 1 1/2" hole using a Hand Punch 1/8" Circle (Figure A).
- Use colored permanent markers to decorate the Hamsa. Reduce the Hamsa, following the directions for Shrink Film.
- Die-cut a SM Heart #2 using clear Shrink Film. Punch a hole at the top of the Heart using Hand Punch 1/8" Circle (Figure B).
- Use permanent color markers to decorate the Heart. Reduce the Heart following the directions for Shrink Film.
- Attach a craft jump ring in the top hole of the Hamsa (Figure C). Attach the Heart to the Hamsa with craft jump rings (Figure C).
- Cut an 18" length of ribbon or cord. Slide the ribbon through the jump ring (see Main Photo). Tie the ribbon in a bow or knot to wear.
