Stuffed Turkey Report

Concept:
Create an art project while studying, researching and writing a report about turkeys.
Objective:
Use an art project to stimulate research questions and form the basis for a report.
Recommended Grade Levels: 1-2, 3-5
Curriculums: English Language Arts, Fine Arts & Crafts
Students are to select research facts about the turkey to complete this report. Consider some of the following research questions when guiding this project:
- What are the male, the female and the baby turkey called? Answer: Tom, hen and poultry.
- How did the Native Americans first use turkey feathers? Answer: To stabilize their arrows.
- Can wild turkeys run or fly? Answer: They can run up to 20 mph and fly short distances at 55 mph.
- Can turkeys hear or see well? Answer: They see extremely well and in color. They do not have ears, but they hear very well also.
- Do all turkeys gobble? Answer: Males do, but the hens make a clicking sound.
- Where are most domestic turkeys grown? Answer: Minnesota, but Maryland, Arkansas, Virginia, Missouri and North Carolina also farm turkeys.
- How many turkeys do Americans eat on Thanksgiving day? Answer: 45 million are eaten, 675 million pounds each year on that one day.
Supplies Used: Cardstock, Glue, Lined Paper, Marking Pens
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Die-cut LG Turkey #2 from dark brown cardstock or construction paper. Die-cut one for each student.
- Die-cut SM Feather from shades of yellow, gold and orange cardstock or construction paper. Die-cut seven for each student.
- Cut a piece of red paper approximately 1/2" by 1" and tape it to the back of the Turkey covering the hole for the wattle (Figure A).
- Have the students write one of the seven research questions on each tail feather (Figure B).
- Students fan out and glue the seven Feathers to the upper part of the Turkey's tail, tucking the ends of the Feathers behind the slit across the Tail (Figure C).
- Die-cut one LG 4" Circle from light tan construction paper for each student.
- Die-cut three LG 4" Circles from white plain or lined writing paper for each student.
- Lay three white or lined writing paper Circles on top of the tan Circle. Fold the four Circles in half (Figure D) and staple in the center. Use the "half Circle" booklet to write the Turkey Report answering the questions asked on the tail Feathers.
- Slip the completed and folded booklet between the Turkey's head and tail Feathers (see Main Photo).
