The teacher can inspire writing of tall tales by reading examples aloud to students. Students can discuss how stories can exaggerate reality and brainstorm tall tales of their own.

Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Black Marking Pen, Glue, Lined Paper, Scissors, Stapler

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

1. Fold a piece of red 12" x 18" construction paper in half, forming a 12" x 9" book. Insert two or three pieces of lined paper inside the book, aligning them with the left edge. Lay the folded edge of the red paper just inside the edge of the XL Hat, Stovepipe and die-cut (Figure A).
2. Open the booklet. Align the lined paper with the back of the booklet and staple twice at the top to hold the paper in place (Figure B).
3. Die-cut one XL Hat, Stovepipe from white construction paper. Cut along the perforated line to create a brim for the Hat. Adhere the white brim to the red Hat.
4. Cut four more times across the white Hat to create two more white stripes (Figure C). Adhere the white stripes to the red Hat booklet.
5. Use a black marking pen to write the title and author information in the white areas on the front of the Hat (see Main Photo).
