A Puzzle for All Seasons
Lesson #5892
Concept:
Create a five-piece round puzzle to depict the four seasons.
Objective:
Recognize attributes of the four seasons and how each season connects with the next.
Recommended Grade Levels: 1-2, Pre-K-K
Curriculum: Science
Science: Earth and Space Science
- As a result of the activities in grades K-4, all students should develop an understanding of changes in the earth and sky.
Create an interesting puzzle tying the seasons together to show how each is related to the next in the weather cycle.
Note: The Flower, Daisy #4 and Sun #2 (shown in the Main Image) have been retired. Consider substituting with Flower, Daisy #2 and Sun #3.
Supplies Used: Adhesive Letters, Cardstock, Chipboard, Glue, Marking Pen, Mat Board, Scissors
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Die-cut XL Puzzle, Circle from mat board, chipboard or poly foam. Use adhesive letters or hand-print "4 Seasons" on the center piece.
- Die-cut the SM Daisy from green and yellow cardstock or construction paper. Put a piece of orange paper over the center of the Daisy (Figure A) and die-cut.
- Leave the green Daisy whole. Trim the flower from the yellow Daisy and adhere to the green Daisy. Trim along the perforated lines on the orange Daisy center and adhere to the center of the yellow Daisy.
- Adhere the Daisy vertically to the side of one of the puzzle pieces. Use adhesive letters or hand-print "Spring" (Figure B).
- Die-cut the SM Sun from yellow and orange paper. Offset slightly and adhere to a Puzzle piece. Add the word "Summer."
- Die-cut LG Leaves, Mixed from a variety of fall colors. Arrange on a Puzzle piece and add the word "Fall."
- Die-cut TINY Snowflakes from white paper. Adhere to a Puzzle piece, letting some of them overlap the edges. Trim even with the Puzzle piece and add the word "Winter" (see Main Photo).
Note: Since the four outer Puzzle pieces are identical, students will need to know the sequence of the seasons to complete the Puzzle correctly.
