Concept:
Create fun penguin bookmarks.
Objective:
Design personalized penguin bookmarks to inspire student reading.
Recommended Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8
Curriculums: English Language Arts, Fine Arts & Crafts
Penguin will clip to book page to mark correct place. Magnet prevents bookmark from falling out of book.
Supplies Used: Cardstock, Colored Pencils, Double-Sided Tape, Glue, Scissors, Self-Adhesive Magnets
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Fold a sheet of white cardstock or construction paper in half.
- Place the fold just inside the cutting edge of the Penguin Die at the Penguin's upper back and cut. This will create a booklet (Figure A).
- Die-cut an additional black and gray Penguin.
- Trim the gray feet and adhere to the front of the Penguin booklet using glue or double-sided tape.
- Cut the black Penguin elements and attach to the front of the Penguin booklet (Figure B).
- Create shading on the Penguin's head and chest using orange and yellow pencils (Figure C).
- Cut two 1" x 3 1/2" strips of self-adhesive magnet. Place the two strips together, magnet sides touching.
- Peel the backing off one side of the magnet and attach to the inside of the Penguin booklet.
- Peel the backing off the other strip of magnet and press the Penguin booklet closed. When the booklet is open, one magnet strip will be attached to each side (Figure D).
