Bookmark, Magnetic Leprechaun
Lesson #6282
Concept:
Students will make their own Leprechaun bookmark.
Objective:
A magnetic Leprechaun will hold a bookmark in place when draped over a page.
Recommended Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8
Curriculums: English Language Arts, Fine Arts & Crafts
Supplies Used: Cardstock, Double-Sided Tape, Glue, Scissors, Self-Adhesive Magnets, Stickers
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
The pull of magnets will hold this bookmark in place when draped over a page.
- Fold a beige or white piece of cardstock or construction paper in half lengthwise. The paper needs to be twice as long as the Leprechaun die.
- Using the Leprechaun die, place the folded paper just inside the top cutting edge of the die, just below the top of the hat, and cut. This will form a hinge (Figure A).
- Die-cut the Leprechaun using multiple colors of cardstock, construction or patterned paper.
- Decorate and layer one or both sides of the die-cut using glue or double-sided tape. To layer, leave one color whole and cut highlights from other colors. Add stickers if desired (Figure B).
- Cut self-adhesive magnets (or any magnet) into two 1" x 2" rectangles.
- Open the decorated Leprechaun and adhere a magnet strip to the inside of one figure. Adhere with glue or double-sided tape if not using self-adhesive magnet.
- If using self-adhesive magnets, stick the two magnet strips together. Unpeel one backing paper and adhere to opened Leprechaun (Figure C).
- Place the second magnetic strip on top of the first magnet and place double-sided tape on top if not using self-adhesive magnets. Fold the Leprechaun closed to adhere the second magnet.
- If using self-adhesive magnets, unpeel the backing of the second magnet and fold the Leprechaun closed (Figure D).
- This will ensure the magnets are aligned (Figure E).
