Standard 1: Understanding and Applying Media, Techniques and Processes

• K-4 - Students use different media, techniques and processes to communicate ideas, experiences and stories.
• 5-8 - Students intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art media, techniques and processes to enhance communication of their experiences and ideas.

Standard 3: Choosing and Evaluating a Range of Subject Matter, Symbols and Ideas

• K-4 - Students select and use subject matter, symbols and ideas to communicate meaning.
• 5-8 - Students integrate visual, spatial and temporal concepts with content to communicate intended meaning in their artworks.

Physical Education: Movement Forms

K-12 Standard 1: Develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

• A physically educated student demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.

Support youngsters with fun lacing and weaving projects to develop fine motor skills. Painting and cutting activities promote motor skills and reinforce movement concepts in the classroom. Use ribbons and lace for weaving to expose students to multiple textures and patterns. Development of fine motor skills will enable students to gain competency in drawing and writing. Consider reading a short story about the Cross or Fish to introduce the art activity.

Supplies Used: Cardstock, Colored Pencils, Crayons, Paint, Ribbon, Scissors, Sponges

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

Creating the Weaving Cross:
1.Die-cut the XL Weaving Cross and XL Weaving Strips in multiple colors of cardstock or construction paper.
2.Use the straight Strips to create a criss-cross pattern (Figure A).
3.Trim the excess Strips to fit the border of the Cross.

Creating the Fish, Weaving:
4.Die-cut the XL Weaving Fish and XL Weaving Strips in multiple colors of cardstock or construction paper.
5.Brightly sponge paint colorful shapes onto the Fish for a fun visual effect (Figure B).
6.Students may choose to embellish the Fish with crayons or colored pencils.
7.Use the wavy Strips to create a wave-like pattern (Figure C).
8.Trim the excess Strips to fit the border of the Fish.
