The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
1. Start with a piece of poster board at least 14" wide and 18" tall.2. Die-cut the XL Food Pyramid #2 using 7 coordinating colors, including two shades of green.
3. Center a dark green Food Pyramid about 7" up from the bottom and adhere it to the poster board using glue, double-sided tape or other adhesive.
4. Using the light green Food Pyramid, cut along the perforated lines in the step area over to the first vertical line. Use the light green pieces that form the tops of the steps and adhere them to the poster (Figure A).
5. From the five remaining colors, cut the strips that form the Food Pyramid and adhere the colors to the poster board leaving the small strip free so the dark green shows through (Figure B).
6. Computer print or handprint on colored papers 3 1/2" high pertinent information on grains, vegetables, fruits, oils, milk, meat & beans. Adhere these to the bottom of the poster.
7. Die-cut the words "FOOD PYRAMID" from purple cardstock or construction paper using the 1 1/4" Block Capital Letter Set. Adhere the letters to the top of the poster (Figure C).
8. Using the LG Food Pyramid Food #1, #2 and #3 dies, die-cut the shapes from a multitude of appropriate colors. Layer and embellish as desired (Figure D).
The Foods used on the poster are as follows:
9. Grains - A slice of bread, two loaves of bread, two bowls of cereal and a bowl of pasta. The slice is embellished with a darker brown crust and wheat flecks. The bowls were die-cut from the bright colors for the bowls and shades of cream, tan and brown to form the cereals and pasta. Cut the colored bowls to allow the cereals and pasta to show through. Use colored pens to add highlights and the pasta sauce.
10. Vegetables - The tomato, yellow pepper and carrot were die-cut from green as well as their appropriate color. The stems were cut from the green veggies along the perforated lines and adhered to the tomato, pepper and carrot. The broccoli was die-cut from four shades of green and highlighted.
11. Fruits - The green and yellow apples and the orange were die-cut from green as well as their appropriate color. The stems were cut off the colored fruits and the fruits were adhered to the green fruits to allow their green stems to show. The grapes were die-cut from shades of tan, purple and green and embellished the same way.
12. Oils - Die-cut and embellish the bottle of oil as desired.
13. Milk - Orange and yellow cheese, a white carton of milk, highlighted with blue, and a glass of chocolate milk. The glass of milk was die-cut from vellum and brown papers. The brown cup of milk was trimmed to form the contents of the glass. The vellum "glass" was trimmed to allow the "chocolate milk" to show.
14. Meat & Beans - Beans, eggs, a drumstick, steak and fish. Use the "holes" in the cheese die-cut from browns and reds as beans. The turkey leg was die-cut from brown and white. Trim the bone part from the brown and layer on the white leg. Leave the red steak whole and trim the T-bone part from a white copy. Layer to create the steak. The fish was die-cut from two tones of purple. One color was left whole and the other trimmed to create highlight.
15. Adhere the Foods to their appropriate place on the Food Pyramid (see Main Photo).
