Objective:

Using a Butterfly mobile, students can create models of various Butterfly species and discuss the role of Butterflies in their ecosystem.

Recommended Grade Levels: 1-2, 3-5, 6-8

Curriculums: Fine Arts & Crafts, Science

Science: Life Science

As a result of the activities in grades K-4, all students should develop an understanding of the life cycle of organisms.

As a result of the activities in grades 5-8, all students should develop an understanding of:

  • the structure and function in living things.
  • populations and ecosystems.
  • diversity and adaptations of organisms.

Background/Prior Knowledge:
Creative Butterfly mobiles are useful teaching tools for lessons in life science. Teachers can use this project for exploring the characteristics of butterflies and/or their role in ecosystems. Students may create reports using the mobiles. Hang these attractive Butterfly mobiles to decorate the classroom.

Supplies Used: Cardstock, Chalk, Crayons, Fishing Line, Glitter Glue, Kite String, Pencils, Pens, Ribbon, Stickers, Tag Board, Thread

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

Creating the Butterfly Mobile:
1.Die-Cut an XL Spiral from dark green tag board. Punch five or six evenly spaced holes on the Spiral for hanging Butterflies using a 1/16" Fiskars Circle Hand Punch.
2.Cut an 8" length of ribbon. Fold the ribbon in half and make a large knot with the two ends. Pull the ribbon from the underneath, through the center hole in the Spiral until the knot is tight against the Spiral. Use the ribbon to hang the mobile (Figure A).
3.Die-cut five or six LG Clothespin Critter, Butterflies using cardstock or construction paper in a variety of colors. Die-cut the Butterfly bodies using black or green paper. Adhere the bodies to the butterflies.
4.Decorate Butterflies wings with colored chalk, pens, pencils or crayons. Punch a hole in the top of one wing of each Butterfly. (Figure B).
5.Highlight the Butterfly antennae, body and wings using glitter glue.
6.Cut various lengths of kite string, fishing line or heavy thread using one length for each Butterfly.
7.Tie one end of each string to a Butterfly. Pull the other end of the string through a hole in the Spiral. Place a sticker over the string and hole to secure the string in place (see Main Photo).
