Archimedean Solids (Snub Cube)
Lesson #8305
Concept:
Students use pattern block pieces or larger geometric shapes to create Archimedean Solids.
Objective:
Given geometric shapes or pattern blocks, students create nets for three-dimensional models of Archimedean Solids.
Recommended Grade Level: 9-12
Curriculum: Math
Supplies Used: Cardstock, Double-Sided Tape, Glue, Poster Board
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
Creating the Snub Cube:
- Students will need to have the net for the Archimedean Solid they are creating. The nets may be obtained on the internet.
- Die-cut 24 blue Triangles using the SM Triangle/Square Die. Die-cut 8 green Triangles using the SM Triangle/Square.
- Die-cut 6 purple Squares using the SM Triangle/Square Die.
- Lay the pieces out as shown to form the net for the Snub Cube. Tape the pieces together on the wrong side (Figure A).
- With the wrong side facing up, tape remaining pieces together (Figure B) to form the Snub Cube 3-D model (Figure C).
- If creating a poster of the Snub Cube net, duplicate steps 1 through 4 above. Leave this net flat and adhere to a piece of black poster board.
- Die-cut the words "SNUB CUBE" from blue paper using the 1 1/4" Block Capital Letter Set. Attach the letters to the poster (see Main Photo).
