Decorative Ribbon Bookmarks

Encourage students to read using bookmarks they decorate.

Students will enjoy using bookmarks that highlight their personal interests or book themes.

K-4 Standard 3: Choosing and Evaluating a Range of Subject Matter, Symbols and Ideas
- Students select and user subject matter, symbols and ideas to communicate meaning.
Inspire year-round reading with student-created bookmarks to suit all occasions. Create bookmarks to supplement language arts lessons, reward good behavior and academic performance or celebrate holidays.
Supplies Used: Adhesive Letters, Cardstock, Colored Pens, Crayons, Glue, Pencils, Ribbon, Scissors, Stickers
The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.
- Die-cut the Plain Bookmark using cardstock or construction paper.
- Die-cut any small or tiny die from multiple colors of cardstock or construction paper.
- Decorate and layer die-cuts using glue. To layer, leave one shape whole and cut highlights from other colors. Create subtle shadings using colored pens, pencils or crayons.
- Adhere decorated die-cuts and stickers to the bookmark (Figure A).
- If desired, cut strips of contrasting paper and adhere to bookmark. Add a sticker to the strip to decorate, or use adhesive letters to spell student's names.
- Cut an 8" length of ribbon and loop through the top of the bookmark (Figure B).
- Bookmarks may also be decorated for gifts or fundraisers (see Main Photo).
