Concept:

Design fun recipe book activities for the 2012 Collaborative Summer Library Program.

Objective:

Celebrate summer reading at your local library with recipe books for anything from book club discussions to personal reflections and creative writing!

Recommended Grade Levels: 6-8, 9-12

English Language Arts: Communication Strategies

K-12: Standard 5

  • Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.

English Language Arts: Developing Research Skills

K-12: Standard 8

  • Students use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.

English Language Arts: Applying Non-English Perspectives

K-12: Standard 10

  • Students whose first language is not English make use of their first language to develop competency in the English language arts and to develop an understanding of content across the curriculum.

These versatile books can support writing exercises in all major subject areas and current events. The students may be prompted to explore any genre to express ideas. Enjoy these creative books for language arts fun!

Supplies Used: Cardstock, Colored Pens or Pencils, Glue, Plastic Rings, Pom Poms, Ribbon, Scissors, Stickers, Tape, Thin Yarn or Colorful String

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Die-cut two XL Album with Tabs & Spacers #1 using cardstock or construction paper. Thicker paper will add durability. These pages will serve as the front and back covers of the recipe book.
  2. Die-cut the LG Square. Write or computer generate the words Recipes for Good Reading. Center and adhere to the Square. Mat the Square and adhere to the Album cover.
  3. Die-cut two of the XL Album #3 for the first and third pages of the book. Die-cut the XL Album #2 for the second page of the book.
  4. Attach the circles to each tab and label as desired.
  5. Place the front cover on top of the pages and the back cover behind the pages. Assemble the recipe book using Plastic Rings, ribbon or yarn (see Main Photo).
