Concept:

Create a visual word web to explore key facts about bats.

Objective:

Given a creative word web, students brainstorm facts about a topic to initiate the writing process.

Recommended Grade Levels: 1-2, 3-5

Curriculums: English Language Arts, Fine Arts & Crafts, Science

Create interesting word webs to organize details in support of a main idea. For further exploration, substitute the spider with other shapes and write on various topics. Consider substituting the written details with shapes as well, to meet needs of emergent writers or English Language Learners.

Supplies Used: Black Pen, Cardstock, Glue, Scissors

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Cut a 12" x 12" piece of purple cardstock or construction paper.
  2. Die-cut the XL Spiderweb #2 using white paper. Adhere the Spiderweb to the purple poster.
  3. Die-cut SM Bat using black paper. Adhere the Bat to the middle of the Spiderweb.
  4. Hand print various facts regarding bats on blue and green paper. Mat the facts to black paper and adhere to the Spiderweb.
