The teacher will guide a phonics lesson by playing a letter-sound recognition game. Student knowledge is tested as they list the beginning sound or blend and then say a given word with that beginning. Students may suggest alternative words that have the same beginning sound.

Supplies Used: Cardstock, Glue, Press-On Letters, Scissors

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Die-cut Bingo Cards from construction paper or cardstock. Cut enough for the entire class.
  2. Die-cut the letters "BINGO" from 1 1/4" letters and adhere them to Bingo Cards, or use adhesive press-on letters.
  3. Print or computer-generate beginning sounds for each Card. Use blends like "ch" and single letters like "b." Every Card should be completely different (Figure A).
  4. Laminate completed Cards for longer use.
  5. Die-cut Markers from laminated construction paper or cardstock using the Bingo Markers die. Markers may also be created using Circles 9-Up, Squares 12-Up, or any Tiny die (Figure B).
  6. Die-cut Game Card from construction paper or cardstock using the Rectangle 4-Up, the Cards, Playing Die or the Test Die from the XL Machine Tool Kit.
  7. Print or adhere computer-generated words using the beginning sounds and blends to the Game Cards. Again, laminate Cards for longer use (Figure C).
  8. Game Directions: The teacher will pick up a Game Card and say the word that appears on it. Students will listen for the beginning sound. If they have that sound/blend on their Card, they cover it with a marker (Figure D). Once the student has five squares in a row, they call "Bingo."
