Fishing for Adverbs
Lesson #9953

Concept:

Decorate fish with adverbs for sentence structure practice.
Can use either AllStar or SureCut Dies.

Objective:

Students select fish with adverbs written on them from a bowl and use them correctly in a sentence.

Recommended Grade Level: 3-5

Note: This lesson can be created using either Ellison AllStar or SureCut Dies.

Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Magnet, Marking Pen, Paper Clips, Ruler, Stick, String, Tape

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Die-cut LG Fish, Fish #2 or Fish #5 from multiple colors of cardstock or construction paper. Die-cut enough for each student to have at least five Fish with some left over. If using an AllStar Machine, die-cut AllStar Fish #2 and Fish #3.
  2. With a marking pen, write an adverb that tells when, where or how on each Fish (Figure A).
  3. Put the Fish in a bowl or large plastic dish and allow the students to choose five Fish. Students then write five sentences using each of the drawn words (Figure B).
  4. A fun variation would be to tape a paper clip behind the mouth of each Fish with a ring sticking out (Figure C).
  5. Using a stick or ruler with a string attached as a fishing pole, students could use a small magnet or an opened paper clip to hook a Fish. The same exercise could be done orally with the entire class participating.
