Create a fun book of travels.

Grade Level:

Encourage students as they follow the writing process to explore anything from simple sentences to five-paragraph essays. These versatile books can support writing exercises in all major subject areas and current events. The students may be prompted to explore any genre to express ideas. Older students can explore library resources to develop research-based writing. Second language learners can relate to given themes to develop writing skills. Through these books, the teacher can develop a unique classroom library featuring students as authors.

Supplies Used: Brads, Cardstock or Construction Paper, Colored Pencils or Crayons, Glue, Scissors, Thread

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

Creating the USA Book:

  1. Die-cut the USA Book using various colors of cardstock or construction paper. Keep one shape whole and cut away highlights from another to embellish the front cover. Keep one solid shape for the back cover.
  2. Die-cut the USA Book using plain or lined paper to create the pages.
  3. Assemble books with brads. Highlight with colored pencils or crayons. Add a title to complete (see Main Photo).

Creating the Globe and Passport Books:

  1. To create the front and back cover of the book, place an unfolded piece of cover material over the mirror-image portion of the die, as illustrated by the Frog images (Figure A).
  2. To create the inside pages, place up to 8 layers of folded paper on the single image on the die, with the fold just inside the top and bottom cutting blade. Cut according to instructions provided with your Ellison machine (Figure B).
  3. Assemble the book by spreading open the inside pages and placing them on top of the cover piece. Apply at least two staples along the center fold of the book as shown (Figure C).
  4. Fold the book closed to complete (see Main Photos).
