Birthday Bulletin Board

Lesson #12127

Remember every student’s birthday with a three-dimensional bulletin board.

Grade Level:

A 3-D birthday cake is the perfect place to highlight the birthdays of all of your students.

This classroom bulletin board illuminates each student’s birthday as a time to celebrate.

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Die-cut the letters for the bulletin board title from construction paper using the alphabet die set of your choice (the lighted numbers can be purchased at craft stores), and staple the letters to the board. (Our title reflects Ellison’s 40th anniversary; however, your classroom board might read BIRTHDAYS, Celebrate with Us, etc.)
  2. Cut by hand long strips (10" wide) of brown paper for the cake layers. Fold in the last two inches on both ends of each cake layer to make a tab.
  3. Cut by hand the icing in a deeper shade of brown, and fasten to each cake strip.
  4. Staple or tape a cardboard box to act as a support to sit under each paper layer (the top tier has a box that is less deep than the bottom tier support). Drape each cake layer over the boxes, and fasten the cake layers to the board using push pins stuck to the two-inch tab inside each paper layer.
  5. Die-cut multiple Candles, and embellish the Candles (this cake features 40 Candles). It would be great to write each student’s name and birth date on a candle.
  6. Staple the tallest/largest Candles to the board so they appear to be sitting on top of the top layer of the cake. Raise some Candles with foam adhesive for extra dimension.
  7. Place adhesive on the top of the smaller/shorter candle bases, and stick the bases onto the inside of the top rim of each cake tier (Main Photo).
