Butterfly Border

Lesson #8797

Decorate a beautiful butterfly border for the classroom.

Grade Level:

Creative borders highlight bulletin boards and personalize classrooms. These borders transform into valuable teacher tools when used to create number lines for math concepts. The teacher can also write a cursive or manuscript letter on each butterfly to teach letter recognition and penmanship.

Given a Butterfly border, a teacher can either decorate the classroom bulletin board or create a useful teaching tool for instructional use.

26746-LG-Ellison SureCut Die - Clothespin Critter, Butterfly - Large

Supplies Used: Construction Paper, Colored Pencils, Glue, Pens, Scissors

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

  1. Start with a long strip of yellow paper tall enough to cover the height of the chosen die.
  2. Determine the width of the accordion fold by measuring the distance between the outermost edges of the LG Clothespin Critter, Butterfly shape, keeping the width of the fold just inside the cutting rule on each side.
  3. Accordion fold the paper, using the width measured as a guide (Figure A).
  4. Lay the folded paper on die, covering the Butterfly. The cutting rule should extend on either side of the folded paper where the shape is to connect. Slide the die and paper into an Ellison machine and cut.
  5. Unfold the paper to reveal the border.
  6. Die-cut orange Butterflies and trim to fit within the yellow Butterflies. The number of Butterflies will depend on the length of the border.
  7. Die-cut the Butterfly bodies from green construction paper. Adhere the bodies to the Butterflies.
  8. Decorate the Butterfly with colored pencils or pens (see Main Photo).
